On October 16, 2003, I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Elizabeth Wurtzel. Her name should sound familiar, but if it doesn't, Elizabeth Wurtzel is the awesome author who wrote Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America, Bitch: In Praise of Difficult Women, and her new book, More, Now, Again: A Memoir of Addiction. She was speaking at Harper College in Illinois, so a few friends and I drove there (and got lost on the way home, might I add) to listen. Elizabeth was amazing; she's so funny, intelligent, and *really* nice. She did a book signing afterwards, but when everyone went to the table to meet her, she actually took the time to talk to each of us individually. So everyone who waited in line got to chat with Elizabeth for a few minutes rather than having her say, "Name? Thanks for coming. Bye," or something like that.
Anyways, it was so exciting to meet Elizabeth because I find Prozac Nation very inspiring. In a sense, I want to follow in her footsteps-- I hope to write a memoir of my life and experiences with depression someday, though I know it won't be anywhere as great as hers. It was really great to meet the woman behind the words, to see Elizabeth in person after reading her story so many times. That was such a great evening. If you've never read anything by Elizabeth, I suggest you do so as soon as you can. Her books are witty, interesting, and really insightful.
For your viewing pleasure, here's a picture of Elizabeth and me that was taken when we met. That's me on the left, and Elizabeth is on the right.
