Cite My Site

Hey there! I've received quite a few letters from visitors requesting to use material from my site in their papers, reports, essays, presentations, etc. In the past, I asked you to email me for more information, but, due to the number of emails, I think it's easier for me just to post the information here. Just follow the instructions below to include my site as a reference for any academic work. Thank you for supporting my site.

The standard format for citing sources in most academic papers is the MLA, or Modern Language Association, format. This format is widely accepted and quite easy to use. Here are some electronic sources commonly listed in Works Cited pages and how to cite them properly:
Note: all entries should be double-spaced, with every line except the first indented; this is true for all sources, not just electronic. Those brackets, represented above by [ and ], should really be the pointy brackets that look like sideways Vs; I tried typing them, but those are used in HTML for tons of things and won't display properly. You can find information on citing every type of source, from books to movies to websites, at
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_mla.html

So how would you cite my site? Well, I would prefer you use the "Article on a Website" form rather than the "Webpage" form. To me, a webpage is simply one single page run by one person, where as a website is a complicated network of pages run by one person/organization. I consider each of my pages "articles" of my website, When The Cut Goes In Deep, rather than individual, independent webpages. So here's an example of how to properly list a page of my site in your Works Cited page.

Sawyer, Ronnie. "Self-Injury." When The Cut Goes In Deep. 6 Jun 2000. Date you visited [http://members.aol.com/whenthecut/private/selfinjury.htm].

Again, replace the square brackets with pointy ones. As you know, I have no "organization" or "institution" affiliated with my site, so you don't write anything for that part. 6 Jun 2000 is the day my site was remodeled; I consider this my "Date of Posting" because that's when my site really took its final form. But you can't use that date for citing every page on my cite. Whenever you're going to cite one of the pages, check that page clearly for an alternate posting date. For example, my "My Life" page is updated frequently; you'll want to replace "6 Jun 2000" with the most recent date of revision. Another example of an alternate posting date can be found on my "Someone Cares" page; that page was created on 10 Dec 2000, so that date also replaces "6 Jun 2000."

I hope this is enough information for you. If you get stuck or need to ask me any questions, just email me. Thanks again, and good luck with your projects!

When The Cut Goes In Deep originally posted on 03-05-2000 and
reposted after remodeling on 06-22-2000.
