Baby Signs, Inc. now offers free, ongoing support to parents using the Baby Signs^® Program in the form of a Yahoo! Group. Here is a recent question from our group:

Q. My darling daughter is 12 months old. We have been signing since she was 10.5 months and she started signing back at 11 months old. My problem is I came home recently and found her using the MORE sign for everything! Is this normal?

Karleen Harp, Baby Signs^® Independent Certified Instructor answered:

It is not unusual for babies to take a step backwards. This sometimes happens around 12 months when babies are concentrating on other important skills - like walking.

It is also not unusual for babies to get confused about the MORE sign or other commonly used signs and use one sign for everything for a period of time.

Just keep doing what you are doing, reinforcing the correct sign as much as possible and she will correct herself eventually. You can also reinforce the correct meaning of the MORE sign by making sure that you are modeling it in a variety of settings - not just at the high chair. Use it for MORE storytime, MORE Legos, MORE play with doll, etc.

Thank you very much Baby Signs, Inc. for your wonderful DVDs. My daughter and I took the Sign, Say & Play^TM Classes at our local Gymboree and the teacher was wonderful! Although Abbe, my daughter, was not too interested in signing at the time, we did notice a change in how she paid attention. Well time went by, and we found that the only movies she liked watching were the Baby Signs^® videos which featured the much loved BeeBo^TM bear. The next thing I knew, she started signing MILK, and began learning other signs too. After she learned all the signs on the Mealtime DVD, we switched to the Bedtime DVD. To my amazement, she learned the signs featured in the second video even faster than the first one! Now she needs a new challenge so we've moved on to the Bathtime and My Pets DVDs. I love watching my daughters face after I reinforce to her how good she is doing and how smart she is for communicating with signs. It is just the best. Thank you for not only enabling my daughter to communicate with me but for the added benefit seeing her confidence grow! She LOVES to sign.
