Tammie’s poem for her grandfather

When Tammie’s grandfather passed away, she wrote this poem which I read for her at the funeral proceedings. It is copyrighted © 2001 Tammie Nagridge and we ask that you do not copy it and send it to others. You are welcome, however, to pass on the web address to this page.

~ Golden Heart ~

Sitting comfortably now, in your big chair
You ask me to recall
The memories we share.

I’ll start with a few of the stories of old
Of the man before me
With a heart of pure gold.

~~~
I was told of a time when you jumped in so freely,
To drive your daughter
To the man she loved dearly.
A young sailor was he and miles away.
He laid in a hospital
For the car accident that day.
Knowing she wanted to be at his side,
You took her hand,
“Rabbit, let’s go for a ride.”
~~~

Many times I recall my two sisters and me
At the pub looking for
Change lost so carelessly.

Coins were left scantily tossed on the floor.
Our job was to find them
Until we saw no more.

We ran and we squealed as we discovered each treasure
All the while you looked on
With the greatest of pleasure.

Little did we know or quite understand
That all the money we found
Was from your own hand.

~~~
I remember a sick, tired man who seemed all alone,
Stuck in a hospital
Wanting his wife to take him home.
Blood is thicker than water I heard you once say
“This man is your kids’ father
and he won’t die this way.”
You offered your house, and to bring him home there.
So grandma could comfort him
With her tender care.
Though he chose not to come and refused to stay,
I can’t forget the compassion
You gave him that day.
~~~

I see it’s time to quit—your cheeks are all red.
Your eyes swell with tears.
This is what you dread.

You get up to see me to your front door
I receive a great bear hug—
The one your famous for.

You walk away quickly before I mutter a peep.
You whisper softly to me,
“I think I’ll go to sleep.”

I flash a loving smile, just before you depart.
I blow a kiss and whisper back,
“Take care, Grandpa, and rest your golden heart.”
