Mark III Fusion Core: |
Nothing spectacular here, really. Working from the innermost areas of color outwards, I painted GW Boltgun Metal in the base of all the insets and on the core handle, handle mount, base inset, and core base. The shell of the core is painted in Bubonic Brown, which took a couple of thin coats to get some decent coverage. The power coils are painted in a color I'm assuming is equivalent to GW Regal Blue (old paint pot...) At present these are just basecoats and do look a little rough, although they're covering well in the depressions, which is what I was going for. These are to be the shadow colors, more or less - the core shell I plan to bring up to a healthy yellow color, the coils a nice electric bluish, and the metal will probably stay as-is aside from highlighting and shadowing. |
In this picture, I put a thinned (1:12 paint/Mix) wash of 1:1 GW Brown Ink/Chaos Black over all the metal areas and along the edges/in the gaps of the power coils. It gave it a nice steel-colored tinge and because of the slight brownish color also shadowed the seam between the yellow and the other shades, much like lining-in would -- only faster. Now for the fun part: following the suggested GW color scheme for the Mk. III Fusion Core, it was to be painted Sunburst Yellow. I tried it - yeah, right... yellow doesn't cover for squat! I mixed up 1:1 GW Sunburst Yellow/Skull White to paint on instead, since adding white would thicken the pigmentation a bit more than just the weak yellow color by itself. As it was, it took 3 thinned coats but covered a lot better and faster than if I had just tried using Sunburst Yellow as-is. (So much for saving time with the wash over the metal...) Because this was a bit brighter than what I was intending it to look, I put a glaze of essentially slightly watered down Yellow Ink over all the yellow casing. Not only did this even out the color, but it made the finish a little smoother and brought it into the realm of a nice, healthy "do not mess with me as I am dangerous and will irradiate you painfully" yellow shade. Perfect! |
Awright, it's starting to look more like a fusion core ought to, I think. The easiest part in this would be the metal - I usually do most of my highlighting and layering at 1 part paint:4 parts Mix, just so it's nice and thin and I can gradually build up to a smooth final edge. This was pretty straightforwards, since I just used straight GW Chainmail paint and Mix on the very edges of the raised metal areas (and there weren't that many of 'em.) Adding in a drop of GW Shining Silver(?) to the puddle on the palette, I put a very thin line along the very edges of the metal areas with more or less the edge of the brush on an angle as opposed to the tip of the brush. The most involved section in this step is the brightening up of the "coils." I used two drops of GW Regal Blue, thinned down 1:4 Blue/Mix, and painted over the raised areas of the coils, leaving a dark edge in the recesses of the previous color. Adding in 2 drops of GW Electric Blue(Ice Blue?,) I painted on a slightly thinner section down the middle, pushing down slightly to blend in with the color underneath. Finally, I added another 2 drops of Electric Blue to the puddle and put a thin line down the very middle (again, applying a slight amount of pressure to blend the thinned paint into the color underneath.) Last, but not least, the lights on the top panel -- one was Regal Blue with a little bit of the highlighting from the coils, one was straight GW Snot Green, and one is straight GW Blood Red. (I repeated the green and red on the back side, also.) |
The finished version! In between pic #3 and pic #4 here, there was a disaster of sorts. I have no idea where they came from, but trying to paint I found most of the casing was covered in tiny little black specks that wouldn't wash off. I went back over all the yellow areas in their entirety with thinned-down Sunburst Yellow. Needless to say, it was very frustrating. The casing ended up looking a richer, more golden yellow color compared to what it had been - I think if I had carried on with the prior color I would've more or less followed the same steps, as follows: Essentially, I used thinned 1:1 Sunburst Yellow/Skull White for the highlighting around all edges of the casing (thinned down, of course.) Adding in another drop of Skull White, I used that as a final edge highlight around all the upper-facing case edges. Not really noticeable, but I did a little bit of touching up on the coils, as well, painting on a little 1:4 Electric Blue/Mix in a narrow blended band around the midline on all of 'em. For the lights/buttons/whatever the heck they are on the case, I added a gemstone effect to each, just because I felt like it. The blue was left as-is, but from the middle of the button downwards I painted 1:1 Regal Blue/White, then across the bottom of the square I painted 1:2 Blue/White. Can't really tell from the picture, but the blue button is actually a hollow square. Just to even things out, I put a little bit of Black Ink in the hollow part. The green button I painted thinned GW Striking Scorpion Green from the middle downwards, and 1:1 Green/White along the lower edge. For the red button, I painted the lower half in a disk shape with thinned GW Go Fasta Red, and then 1:1 Go Fasta/White for the lowest edge of the round button. The top of the red wasn't nearly dark enough for a good gemstone effect, so I touched up the very top edge a little with thinned GW Scab Red. Last but not least, a tiny dot of white paint on all the buttons front and back of the Core finished it off. |
