Although more and more women musicians are making household names for themselves, it is still unusual to see many women performers at any one time and place in the local music scene outside of a "women's" music festival. Here are some sites that women musicians might find useful for networking purposes, business tips, or just plain old encouragement and inspiration. We are not alone!
Drummergirl: the title here is pretty self-explanatory. This site has come a long way since I first saw it online back in 1995; very impressive!
Gerri Gribi, a folk singer, has taken on the mission of locating songs (many from several centuries back!) that portray women as empowered, autonomous beings.
Indiegrrl: a network of women musicians (mostly solo acts) in the independent music industry. This site is a great one-stop shop of resources for those of us trying to make it on our own.
Pre-Menstrual Vocal Syndrome: by Eric Armstrong, creator and manager of the online column "voice + speech".
This article describes the vocal trials and tribulations that women singers (especially operatic sopranos) can look forward to when they begin menopause. (Makes me glad I'm a folk singer -- that style is much more forgiving of vocal quirks!)
Women in Music National Network: "A non-profit organization that recognizes and supports the efforts of women in the music industry through educational and networking resources."
Women in Music with Laney Goodman: This is a site where you can (by downloading the proper technology) hear broadcasts of this radio show online!
