The obituary of Sophia Lookinbee Doty An Aged Lady

The Pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church was called to Bethel church, four miles south of Benton Sunday afternoon, to preach the funeral sermon over the body of Mrs. Sophia Doty, who died Sept. 3, at the home of her daughter, at the advanced age of 94 years. She was born in North Carolina in the year 1815 where she grew to womanhood, marrying the Rev. John Doty of her native state, in 1839. They afterwards came to Illinois settling on a farm near Benton, where they brought up their family. Mrs. Doty was a member of Bethel Methodist Episcopal church for more than half a century. During the last 12 years she has been bed-ridden, and was most tenderly cared for by her only surviving daughter, Mrs. Keith. Besides Mrs. Keith, two sons survive, Daniel who is a farmer in the state of Oklahoma, and the Rev. Hiram Doty of Oklahoma City, who is the district superintendent of the Geary district Oklahoma conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Besides the children, there are a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren who mourn her loss. The funeral was attended by a large concourse of people, and the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery at Bethel church, to await the resurrection morning. ____________________________________
[ The youngest son of Mrs. Doty corresponded for the Tribune many years ago. He was at that time a youth of about seventeen. He was the first to introduce - To the best of our knowledge - the short, pithy sayings that are now so popular a feature with metropolitan journals, under the headings, Pointed Paragraphs, Reflections of a Bacheler, Sunflower Philosphy, Quaker Reflections, and many more others. The editor published Mr. Dotyís contributions under the caption of ì Aphorismsî. The young man died about 20 years ago. A brother of his was a comrade of express agent Wheatly during the civil war.]
