A List 'O Links!
Music-related (various):
BlissFest A wonderful acoustic music festival held each year in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. I've been attending this since 1998.
FolkMusic.org A great
reference site for folk/acoustic music and musicians.
Dirty Linen The online
companion to a fine folk music publication.
Pollstar This is a
great guide to upcoming tours.
Ovation(My main acoustic is a 1995 #1861 Standard Balladeer. I've been using this pretty exclusively since I first bought it. I also own a 12-string Balladeer.
Fender The maker
of my first electric guitar- a '78 Strat, to be exact.
Rickenbacker One of my electric guitars is a Ric 330/12. I've been brushing up on my Byrds stuff ever since. Lucky for me, I know lots of folks who like to sing harmonies!
Paul Reed Smith. My main electric these days is a PRS Santana model. For those of you familiar with the brand, no, I didn't win the lotto. While PRS normally makes premium guitars in the 2K range and upwards, the Santana is their "budget" model. It also plays better than most of the other major brands' high-end models.
The Acoustic Cafe The REAL "unplugged" show, originating from Ann Arbor, and featuring some of the best known (and unknown) acoustic singers and songwriters. Site features RealAudio clips of the show's in-studio guests' peformances.
Fellow musicians & artists:
Steve Deasy Steve's got a rock sensibilty, a folk voice, a great gift for melody, and some of the sharpest wit you've ever heard. (Unless, of course, you happen to be a lawyer...)
Leslie Frederick Author, musician, photographer, sound engineer, and fellow X-er- Leslie is a true Renaissance woman. She has published 5 CDs- one of her written works and four of her music- about her many journeys.
K.T. Lowe AKA Kecheiro Akuseki, AKA Professor Kechi. Whatever moniker she's using, she's a supremely gifted, highly provocative writer, as well as the keeper of just about Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Warren.
Ken Marzorati An extraordinarily talented classical guitarist, as well as a talented writer and an avid bicyclist. His online journal - a collection of personal, sensitive, pointed, and often hilarious observations - is alone worth the trip, IMHO.
Kris McLonis A songwriter,
musician, and a gorgeously gifted singer to boot, Kris' page has a great collection of links for musicans, songwriters, librarians, and even mondegreen fans. What's a mondegreen, you ask? Visit her page and find out!
Charlie Monterey
In addition to being a fine singer/guitarist/songwriter (and cohort in Big Green X), Charlie maintains
a thorough list of Detroit-area open mic nights, acoustic musicians, and musical happenings. Be sure to check out the Wooden Music Bulletin Board there as well.
David Nefesh He has a voice reminiscent of Michael Stipe, but David's songs and sound are his own - thoughtful and beautiful. David's a frequent performer at Xhedos' open mic- and can usually be found performing on any given evening somewhere in the Detroit area.
Music In the Yard Maintained by Charles Sanderson - Charlie's longtime performing partner, my fellow X-er, and our resident computer guru. In addition to MITY information, Charles maintains a great web site with lots of pix and musical information.
Nisi Shawl A former Michigander and writer of both fiction and nonfiction, Nisi has had her work published in numerous periodicals and sci-fi collections.
Xhedos Cafe
This is a favorite performing venue. And five open mic nights a week, I might add. Gotta do something with that Wednesday host, tho... :-) Great coffee & food, too!
Other favorite musicians (under construction, but will always be incomplete):
Peter Gabriel This is also the site for PG's Real World label, which has done some great things for popularizing "World Music".
Robert Fripp/King
Crimson
Tony Levin's Page Bassist/Stickist
for Crimson, Gabriel, and many others.
Richard Thompson
Adrian Legg Included as a reference as well as a point of interest - his site contains lots of alternate tunings & tabs.
Reference sites:
Urban Legends & Folklore To me, this is THE most useful link on the whole net. This is the site I reference every time someone sends me a panic message, virus warning, missing child alert, or anything that promises some tangible result from forwarding their e-mail to ten of my friends. I wish more people would visit this one before sending on that s@#t...
Yahoo! A good place to set up an secondary e-mail address (to have spam sent to).
Hotmail Ditto as above
Google The first (and usually only) place I go searching on the web.
Internet Address Finder
The List A list of Internet
Service Providers
Switchboard A great place
for looking up phone numbers!
Mapquest Cool mapping site!
The Detroit Free Press Self-explanatory
The Metro Times Ditto
The Onion America's FINEST news source. They said so. I have to agree.
Ski Central This is about the only sport I indulge in - won't do much good in the summertime, but it's a necessity in the winter.
M Live A great place for Michiganders to check movie listings, concert listing, and general entertainment events.
Mac Stuff (...for The Few And The Proud):
Apple Computer
Dr. Bott This is a great place to get parts for Macs - especially slightly older ones. If it wasn't for them, my laptop would be running with a 5-minute battery..!
The Shareware Page
MacAddict
MacHome
Podcasting News. Dedicated to one of my newer passions.
Podcast Alley. Ditto.
Other interesting sites:
The Tourette Syndrome Association. A member of my family has Tourette Syndrome. Unfortunately, most people associate this disorder with scenes from lousy movies like "Duece Bigelow" - which really doesn't cover it. This is one of the best sites in the country to learn more about Tourette's.
The Finan Family History page This is for any Finans, friends of Finans, or fans (?) of Finans.)
Shadowland My friend Rob's
page.
PythOnline Monty Python's
site - possibly the only online site where SPAM is welcome!
CNN
David Letterman
The Zorb I saw this thing used at the 2002/3 Peter Gabriel tour. It's not exactly a consumer product....it's just weird. And way cool.
Yes, I know that's not a lot of links (compared to those of you with
10 pages of them), but you'll live. As I find more cool places to hang
out, I'll be happy to share them with you.
