It is not known what happened to Jacob, but his wife, Anna,
his son Henry,
and daughter Elizabeth turn up in the Spottswood's Germanna
Colony in Virginia in or about 1725. Jacob's wife Anna was the daughter
of Second Germanna colonist Henry Snyder. Jacob's daughter Elizabeth
married Christopher Tanner. Jacob's great-granddaughter
Mary (Polly) Aylor married Pastor William Carpenter Jr., who was pastor
at Hebron and later at Hopeful Lutheran Church in Boone County,
Kentucky.
In 1810, several Aylor's left
their Virginia home and took the overland route through the
Cumberland Gap along the
Wilderness Road to
Northern Kentucky.
Their story, along with that of the Second Germanna Colony, is a
fascinating study in
early American history.
For more information on this subject, you can write
to The
Germanna Foundation, PO Box 693, Culpeper, VA 22701, or send
me an email. Also check out some of my other Germanna links below.
I have a large collection of Aylor and related
families in GEDCOM format. Eventually, I'll have a link to it here, but
for now, feel free to
email me. I
am always willing to share info! My research focuses primarily on those
Aylors who migrated to
Boone County, KY in the early 1800's from Virginia (Germanna and
Madison County, where the
Hebron
Lutheran Church is located).
As far as software, I use an old DOS-based program called "The Family Edge Plus"
written by Carl York. I have been unable to find any web sites that sell this program,
and based on the fact that it is DOS, I assume it is no longer available.
Which is a shame, really, because it is a fanatastic tool, extremely
fast, intuitive, and easy to use. It has tons of keystroke-saving
shortcuts built in.
Another program I like, more for printing data than for entering it, was
once called GED*Mate, aka Corel Family Publisher. Nowadays, I hear it
goes by the name of Family Tree Creator. I have the original GED*Mate
(by Progeny Software in Canada). It prints fantastic reports and even
an automatically-indexed book right from your GEDCOM file. I can't
find a good link to it on the web.
I am still working on my book. The working title is The Aylor Family of Boone County, Kentucky.
Its been 15 years in the making and shows no sign
of even getting close to being done. I figure at this rate I may have it done before
I retire. :-) I plan to focus on descendants of those
Aylors who moved to Boone County, Kentucky in the early 1800's, but I
will also have some of the Virginia Aylors.
I may publish the Anthony Aylor (Oehler) line in a separate book, depending on whether
there is any interest.
If [when] by some miracle it gets to the stage where its almost ready, I'll make
a big deal about it on this web site and the various genealogy mailing lists I subscribe to.
Some Germanna listers were asking about the family of Mordecai Vaughan of Culpeper Co, VA.
Here is a short tree. (Note: this tree was made by converting my GEDCOM file to Treepad using GED2TPD, then using Treepad to Export it to the Web.)
TOTALLY REDESIGNED TREE! NEW INFO! Feb 2004
I have been trying to connect the mysterious
Anthony Aylor of Rockingham County,
Virginia to the Germanna Aylors. If you can help, let me know.
New evidence suggests he may have come from Maryland prior to Virginia.
Watch this area - I plan on posting an updated GEDCOM soon!
Some of his descendants settled in Georgia.
Now, I have an even more baffling mystery! See if you can help me
connect Frederick Aylor of Augusta Co. VA to
Anthony or Germanna!
You can join the AYLOR Family Discussion List by sending an
e-mail message to
AYLOR-L-request@rootsweb.com with the text SUBSCRIBE in the body of
the message. You will receive directions from there via email.
Do not include any other keywords or signatures, etc.
The AYLOR-L list is very low volume, so if you sign up, you won't be bombarded
with a bunch of email. I took over as ListOwner back in November of 1998.
I'd like to see some more interest, but let's face it, Aylor isn't that common of a name!
Here is some additional info about this list: Aylor
