Empire Walkers: AT-ST and AT-AT

Update: 11-09-2006

I'm not certain what happened but I've apparently misplaced the full size images for these two so thumbnails will have to do till I locate my site arcives. Never reorganize your office, nothing will ever be found again...

The AT-ST leg joints were made with click hinges, introduced in the Star Wars sets, and the feet were built Studs-Down and were complete with the 'fence cutter' toe spurs. It was completely free standing, though slightly top heavy. It required a few rebuilds to get the center of gravity back far enough to keep it from nosing over constantly. There was enough room inside for a Pilot and a Co-Pilot and I included positionable blast shields, a working top hatch, and positionable guns.

The AT-AT turned out to be a more ambitious project than I could actually achieve with my (sorted) collection. Finding enough grey plates and unused bricks tapped out what I had available after building the AT-ST. Like the actual LEGO AT-AT, mine was selectively compressed considering the Star Wars RPG blueprints that I used for reference indicate it is large enough to carry 2 AT-ST walkers inside. Toward the end of the build, I realized I was out of the tall sloped bricks in grey and had to substitute black instead. I decided on an arrangement that could represent battalion markings, something that wasn't too difficult to believe. The hardest parts of building it were getting the legs to hold weight when posed as if walking vs in 'locked' or straight position (I never could completely achieve this goal) and keeping the head from falling off due to its weight. My building techniques at the time were pretty rudimentary. I can think of a lot of changes I'd make if I were to build one now.

..

I had a lot of fun building both of these walkers and the challenges were as much of the fun as the satisfaction in completing them.
