Pacific Island Airstrip from World War II - built: 1999
This project began with catching part of a life long favorite TV show that was airing at the time (1999) on the History Channel, Black Sheep Squadron. It tells the story of Gregory "Pappy" Boyington and his rag-tag group of misfits due for court marshals, that no other squadron wanted and how they formed into one of the best fighter/bomber squadrons of World War II.
I can remember watching the show with my mom when I was about 3 and a half years old in 70's. I also remember that we used to sit and watch it and munch on Ritz crackers with Kraft's Cream Cheese and Pineapple spread. I was mostly interested in the planes, though. Mmm.. good memories! :)
While not "historically" accurate (it was made for TV after all, but it's close), it tells an entertaining story and I highly recommend watching a few episodes if you see it being airred or, better still, the first season box set is now out on DVD. Pappy's Autobiography, "Baa Baa Black Sheep" is also highly recommended if World War II history fascinates you.
When I came across another LEGO builder's B-17 bomber model, iit led me back to the age old question:
"I wonder what would happen if..."
These pages document the results.
