Johnny Cash

Johnny Cash is one of the first musicians I came to love to listen to as a child. I remember hearing his songs on 8-tracks or records as a child as he was one of my father's favorites along with Hank Snow, Jimmie Rodgers and a host of others.

One of the first concerts I ever went to was to see Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash at the Evergreen State Fair in Monroe, Washington when I was maybe 6 or 7 years old, along with my parents. I can't remember much about the concert other than we weren't very far from the stage in pretty good seats just to the left of center stage. One thing I do remember is the performance of "One piece at a time". I thought it was funniest song I'd ever heard and I still grin when I hear it. The music video for it was great as well -- projected up on a large screen behind the stage. I wish I knew where to find that video because it was a gem. All I really remember is at the end where Johnny sings about his wife coming out to look at the car and being a bit worried. The video showed June having to get into the car by crawling through the trunk. I have truly loved Johnny Cash and his music ever since that concert.

Johnny Cash was just as much a hero to me as Dale Earnhardt. He lived the American Dream - from a simple upbringing to successful career, a loving family and having become a living legend. Johnny Cash will be missed, but he will never be forgotten. He has finally shed the body that has slowed him down over the last few years and he has been reunited with June, never to hurt or be parted again.

Johnny may be gone, but his music has left the world a far better place and his influence and contributions will continue forever.
