Generation No. 1

1. CHARLES L.1 LINERODE was born Bet. 1760 - 1765 in Germany, and died Abt. February 1830 in Bethlehem Twp. Stark Co. Oh.. He married HANNAH Bet. 1790 - 1793 in Germany.

Notes for CHARLES L. LINERODE:

Charles is most likely the progenitor of all Linerodes in the United States and possibly the world. A copy of Charles' will, dated 11 April,1822, shows he signed his name"Charls Lineroad". Stories from earlier generations claimed the name had been changed when Charles and his family arrived in the U.S. It probably changed at least a little in this country as Charles is listed ( it appears ) as "Charles Linerote" in 1810 census of Guilford Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Also listed in "Pennsylvania German Pioneers 1727-1808" by Ralph B. Strassburger is a " Johanna Jacoba Lindrot " one in family, arrived June 22, 1803 in Philadelphia Pa. on ship "Traveler" from Amsterdam, Captain George Billups Master. Listed were 137 passengers. Michael H. Tepper, gen. editor of book "Passenger Arrivals at Port of Philadelphia" had this listing,"Lindroth, Joh. Jai., 1 in family" arrived June 22, 1803 aboard the ship "Traveller". Could this Johanna be "Hanna" the wife of Charles? If so, did Charles precede his wife to the U.S.?

From the Land Office at Wooster, Ohio, Charles purchased the South West quarter of section 30, Bethlehem Township, Stark County, Ohio. This section contained 220.9 acres and cost was $2.00 per acre. Although requirements at this time called for only a 1/4 payment at purchase, with 1/4 payments yearly for 3 years, Charles made a double payment on date of purchase and a double payment on June 12, 1819. Total cost was $441.80. Charles land was made Patent September 27, 1819. On this record

name was spelled Linerod.

When son Frederick was married in 1819 , his name was written"Lineroth" on marriage return.

Charles will, written in German, was signed "Charls Lineroad" 11 April 1822.

1820 census showed "Linerode".

1830 census showed "Lineroad".

Census records shows Lineroad interspersed with Linerode through 1870.

It is not known how many of these variations were the result of carelessness or ignorance.

Shown here is a list of appraisement of the personal property of Charles Linerode on 18 Feb. 1830. Spelling as in original document.

Notes for OTHO LINERODE:

Otho purchased 15 acres in Bethlehem Twp. on Jan. 5. 1829. He paid $60. This land bordered his father's land on the north and brother's land to the west. The boy's in section 31 and father's in 30. He purchased another 100 acres from parents estate.

At this time it is unknown where or when Otho married, perhaps in Pennsylvania.

From his father's will, it is suggested that Otho was a craftsman as well as a farmer. This craft is unknown.

In 1840 census, there was an extra boy listed in Otho's household. This was perhaps a son of his brother Frederick as one of Fred's sons was missing from his home that year. This with the fact that there were doctor bills unpaid in Otho's Probate records, may suggest he was ill for a time prior to his death and Fred's son may have been helping with farm chores.

Child of OTHO LINERODE and SARAH SHERMAN is:

i. CATHARINE3 LINERODE, b. Abt. 1820, Bethlem Twp.Stark Co, Ohio; d. Unknown, unknown; m. ABNER STOUFFER, March 10, 1841, Stark Co, Ohio.

4. FREDERICK2 LINERODE (CHARLES L.1) was born November 13, 1797 in Baden, Germany, and died February 07, 1872 in Bethlehem Tp., Stark Co., Ohio. He married ELIZABETH DEARDORFF December 02, 1819 in Tuscarawas Co, Ohio, daughter of ISAAC DEARDORFF and EVE ZIEGLER.

Notes for FREDERICK LINERODE:

Tombstone and death record show Frederick died Feb. 07 1872 at age 74 years 4 months 17 days. This would make his birth Sep. 21 1797. Genealogist put little faith in birth dates appearing on tombstones as they have often been proved in error.

Fred bought 30 acres of land, half on Jan. 15, 1829, the rest on Dec. 15, 1829. This was in section 31 of Bethlehem Twp. Both purchased from Robert M. Kilgore. He paid $56 for first and $75 for other. Date of settlement here was 1833. Fred purchased a little more than 128 acres in section 30 from parents estate.

His will signed 25 March,1862 showed he also owned two lots in Dundee, Ohio.

Below is from Fred's Naturalization Record.

24th Sept.1840

Personally appeared in open court Frederick Lineroad a native of Germany and at present residing in the county of Tuscarawas and State of Ohio and made application to be admitted a citizen of the United States, and the Court being satisfied from the testimony of __________and by the oath of the said applicant himself, that he has had a continued residence in the United States for more than five years, three years of which time was during his minority, that he is now twenty one years of age. That for the year last past he has resided in the State of Ohio, and that for the last three years it has been bona fide his intention to become a citizen of the United States and to renounce forever all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State or sovereignty whatever and particular to the Emperor of Germany and that he had maintained a good moral character and had appeared duly attached to the principles of the Constitution of the said United States and well disposed to the good order and happiness of the same. He the said Frederick Lineroad having here taken an oath to support the Constitution of the United States and to renounce and abjure forever all allegiance and fidelity to every foreign Prince, Potentate, State and Sovereignty whatever and particularly to the Emperor of Germany, he is thereupon admitted a citizen of the United States of America.

Why Fred waited so long to be Naturalized and why he is shown as a resident of Tuscarawas County is unknown since all census records have him in Stark County.

Fred in 1860 was shown living in Sugar Creek Township, with him was listed his sister Elizabeth, widow of Walter Wilson. Fred's wife Elizabeth was in next household and their daughter and granddaughter living with her.

We may only speculate on this arrangement.

Notes for WALTER WILSON:

From 1875 Atlas of Stark Co. Ohio

Pursued by a bear.

A man named Wilson, brother-in-law of Frederick Linerode, went hunting with J. Grounds about three miles west of Bolivar, near the home of Mr. Ramsey. Wilson coming across a bear, shot at but did not kill it. The animal instantly turned upon him, giving him no time to load his rifle. the only choice left him was to seek safety in flight. Grounds, hearing the report of Wilson's rifle, came up and found Wilson at his greatest possible speed, and the enraged animal in hot pursuit. Wilson described a circle around Grounds, who shot at the bear twice, but in the excitement failed each time. Wilson was getting weaker, and the enemy was gaining on him at every jump. He called on Grounds to shoot the bear for he could hold out no longer. Grounds grew near the track as they were coming once more around. Holding his rifle level, he fired, and both Wilson and the bear fell. Grounds thought that he had made too good a shot, and hit both; but on turning his companion over he found him unhurt. the bear was shot dead, the ball having passed through its head. From some superstitious notion neither of them would touch the meat, and so they let the Indians have it.
