K-9 Duties

bulletDetection: Four of our K-9's are trained to detect narcotics and two are trained to detect explosives. The explosive detection teams are also deployed to locate guns and ammunition.
bulletSuspect Location and Apprehension: All of our dogs are trained as dual purpose K-9's. Along with detection they all perform patrol duties such as handler protection, tracking, area searches and building searches for suspects and they can also be deployed during vehicle extractions
bulletCriminal Interdiction: Our K-9 Unit's narcotics teams routinely check hotels, storage facilities, parcel delivery companies conducting random drug sniffs to locate narcotics being transported from one location to another. K-9 Teams are also deployed during traffic stops to locate suspected narcotics across the city.
bulletSeveral K-9 Teams are assigned as part of the Hammond Police Department Tactical Unit.
bulletK-9 Teams are also assigned to be available for our Narcotics Unit to assist them as needed.
bulletTraining is a major part of the duties of a K-9 Team. The K-9 Unit holds formal training days every other week. Individual K-9 Teams train regularly during their work shift during down time and on their off time. We consider training to be the most critical part of our duties as the quality of our training is reflected in every deployment.
